105 rounds around the track in <6 hours!

Distance : 42.195km
Time : 5 hours 49 minutes and 45.35 seconds.

Rank
:
1360/3827
(for 42km males)
: 1360/4565 (for 42km males & females)

I raced the night (and won the night) by completing my first ever marathon, in under 6 hours. I NEVER expected to be able to complete it under 6 hours. I shocked even myself. I've never made a run above 18km in distance. But today, i ran 42.195km in one go.

"Good luck" was the reaction that most people gave me, if not the the doubtful eyes that say "your, crazy to attempt 42.195km having only attempted 18km maximum distance." some teachers even told me "finishing it alone will be a challenge for you." Well, to your face! Let me take you through the 42.195km.

But i really have Azhar (6 hour pacer) to thank for the under 6 hour timing. I tailed him from the 18 km mark when i saw "PACER, 0600 hours, SURE CAN ONE!" on the back of his singlet, yup, sure can one. He offered a perfect combination of fast paced running, and HEAVY walking. In fact, our walking speed was even faster than some of the runner's running speeds. We walked past people who were literally RUNNING, what an irony. But his combination of recovery periods from walking, and fast running, maximised my body's potential. Without Azhar, i would be no where close to 6 hours. Azhar even kept me company and we took photos with his cool portable running camera at the 32km mark, and at some other points in the race, which was a perfect distraction when my moral was hell low.
Introducing, Azhar
Azhar and Me near 25km

0000 - Midnight (FLAG OFF). The atmosphere was vivid and carnival like. everyone was running, and overtaking each other

0100 - First hour over. i had reached the 8km mark around this time, and i saw the first person walking already.

0200 - Had covered approx 16km by this time. All systems still green and body still going good.

0251 - I met Azhar, the pacer for the 6 hour completion time, and decided to tail him. covered approx 21km by this distance

0300 - Hunger sets in, and Azhar decides to share some "power beans" with me. Hes a real lifesaver.

0400 - Munched on a few power gels by now. Covered around 28km. Azhar shared some salt tablets with me as well. It helps prevents muscle cramps by replenishing the salt in muscles.

0430 - Reached 32km mark. Legs fairly fatigued.Random picture with a fellow runner with Azhar

0502 - Reached 37km mark. My body shows its first signs of lactate acid build up in my tighs. Last 5km more. this is where my nightmare begins.

0550 - Last 5km was HELL. I could clearly feel the lactate building up in my legs. My legs were clearly at a threshold, running anymore was out of my options, and all i could do was to alternate between short bursting runs and heavy paced walking, a strategy Azhar told me to follow. But hell yeah, finishing in 5hours 50minutes was sensational!

Here are my timings!!

First 10km -
1hour 18minutes

10km - 20km - 1hour 27minutes (met Azhar the 6hour pacer at around 18km)

20km - 30km
- 1hour 08minutes (Good timing compared to the rest of my 10km distances, all thanks to Azhar's pacing)

30km - 42km - 1hour 55minutes (slowest timing of all. Was pushing myself like mad to finish it)

No words can describe the joy i contained when my heavily soaked and blistered feet crossed the 42.195km line.
The experience of running 42.195km was AWESOME, and I'll definitely be back next year for more action. Pushing yourself beyond your limits really is an ADDICTIVE sport and after 42.195km, I'd say impossible is NOTHING.

Although, i think I'll settle for 21km half marathons next. hahah!

Yay. Had maths and geography tests today, finally have it over and done with. It feels as though a i just lifted a tank off my shoulders. Finally some breathing space. Heh!

Anyway, check this out~

Yup, you guessed it !! That's me doing taekwondo! In 10 years time that is.
Runnin' away runnin' away
Hey hey hey runnin' away

I had the perfect girl we'd spend together hours everyday
You'd say that I had it made and I was all for the commitment
But then she started wantin' more from me
And my mind began to change suddenly I didn't feel the same
I didn't know what I was doing

I was dodging commitment start but don't finish
My M.O.'s always the same girl I know I been trippin'
I'm confessin' I'm confessin' so baby just hear me out
I'm confessin' I'm confessin' so baby just see me off
I wanna show my heart but I don't know where to start

So I keep runnin'
With real love in my face
Why am I breakin' away
I keep runnin'
So scared of the heartbreak
So scared of makin' mistakes
I keep runnin'
When all I really need is you
All I really need is you
But I keep on runnin' away
Hey hey hey

I'm kinda sick of this shit. After some reflections, I'd have to admit that my lack of focus has played a role in the blame game for my shitty results. But, fuck it because the school's notes is shitty as hell.

What kinda stupid geog notes are these? Full of redundant shit, how to study?
=( I promise to devote more time to studying from now on.

Hello! I'm darn tired now. Just got home from a whole day of taekwondo, and I'm here to blog about why it was a blast.

Started taekwondo started at 1.30pm for me and ended at 7.30pm for us all. We focused the entire training for those going for the tournament in two weeks time, and we were all practicing our patterns. things looked shaggy and messy for our team (Pal Jang) initially. After 3 hours of hard analysis and troubleshooting, we finally had a feel of the "connection" Eric was telling us about when performing our pattern. It was a delightful moment and honestly, words cant describe how relieved i was when we finally did it in synchrony (well, at least 80% sync. lol). It was probably the 1000th time we did the pattern, so yeah, it was relieving especially after hours of sweat and effort. For a moment, it seemed like we'd never get it right. Heng.

Today's tkd training was a real moral booster for us. And little did i suspect that it was things like little dumb cheers that raised our moral after a hard 5 hours of training.

Much less did i expect a dull boring day such as today,
to be so fulfilling.

Mileage: 13.818km / 8.586 miles
Time : Approx 1hour 30 minutes

Race day draws nearer everyday, yet everyday i feel more and more unprepared for the ordeal. I should be tapering by now, but i find myself increasing my distance because i feel unconditioned enough. I whizzed through a notorious course of ups and downs in NTU, and then made a tiring trip down pass Arena country club and back. Total mileage? A tiring 13.818km. I could feel my legs weighing an additional 100kgs by the end of the run, and i still have no idea how I'd survive 42.195km. God bless me -_-.

Cher (identity hidden) gave me a good wake up call the other day. "i'll write some nasty comments in your report if you dont wake up ur idea". Well, I've been struggling to strike a balance between taekwondo training, running, and studying. They're all so important, i cant afford to drop any of those in my schedule! I've got Biology SPA and Maths quiz next week, a Geography test the week after and god knows what other shit.

And finally, in the last week of may, I've got the inter school taekwondo pattern tournament, 15km run ( Singapore passion run ), 42.195km ( Adidas Sundown Marathon ). That's one tournament, and 57km in a single week!!

Give me a break, its not like i can just go for these events w/o training. I've got to do taekwondo training 3-2 times a week, and mileage training 3 times a week to prepare and condition properly for these events. How am i supposed to give a good shit to my studies? I mean, for fucks sake, I'm trying, and getting a wake up call like that certainly ain't helping. I'm well awake alright.

20 more days to RACE DAY!
Take a look at the race map!
